WhatsApp’s Double Blue Checkmark May Be Deactivated

The news regarding the double checkmark on WhatsApp has left no one indifferent.

The ability to know precisely if and when sent messages have been read by the recipient has unsettled millions of users worldwide, mostly causing widespread discontent.

The reason is that the double blue checkmark was immediately branded as a sort of attack on privacy, especially since, at the moment, there doesn’t seem to be any way to deactivate this “notification” which is, in fact, entirely automatic.

However, all this fuss appears to have prompted WhatsApp’s technicians, who are working on new features, to reconsider the issue in recent hours.

In fact, according to what was anticipated by the portal Softonic, work is underway on a new update for the messaging app, which would allow users to decide whether or not to activate the double blue checkmark feature.

This means that the ability to know if and when a message has been read could soon become merely an optional choice and not an imposed functionality.

Exactly as happens for the mechanism to deactivate the last seen status, however, the double blue checkmark would then be deactivated both “incoming” and “outgoing.” In summary, our contacts wouldn’t know if we’ve read a particular message. At the same time, however, we wouldn’t be able to view that information either, when sending a message ourselves.

At the time of writing, no official communication has been released by the WhatsApp staff, so it is not possible to know for sure when or if the double blue checkmark will actually be disabled.
