The reactions on social media echo traditional media commentary, expressing the common sentiment about current events and news, which the social intelligence company WelikeCRM has identified through its analysis: “The Social Jury of the Italian Oscars.”

The analysis reveals that comments expressing pride and enthusiasm are proportionally higher than criticisms. Among the criticisms, there is a reflected negativity referring to the country’s economic and political crisis evoked by the film, rather than the movie scenes themselves.

In the word clustering performed by the analysis, names of politicians such as “berlusconi,” “gasparri,” and “nichivendola” emerge, along with terms like “decadence,” “decadent,” “regress,” “italians,” “poverty,” and “country.” This testifies to how “The Great Beauty,” appreciated by Americans for its Fellini-esque allusions, originality, and Roman setting, reveals itself to Italians as a mirror in which some have recognized an image of beauty and pride, while others have been shocked by signs of aging and decay.

In this case, as in others, social media proves to be a valuable tool for listening to public opinion, which, through impromptu film critique comments, expresses the unease of a historical moment.
