7-inch Surface: Possible 2014 Release

Within a year, the 7-inch Surface tablet could arrive on the global market: a hypothesis under study by Microsoft.

A few months ago, we reported on a probable Microsoft project: the production of the Xbox Surface device. While nothing highly significant has emerged from that front (perhaps because efforts are focused on the arrival of Xbox 720), rumors are currently circulating that Microsoft is very seriously considering the release of a 7-inch Surface tablet.
This device could be the protagonist of 2014, according to the Wall Street Journal: production is expected to start at the end of 2013, with sales launching in the first few months of 2014.
However, no technical details have been disclosed yet, so it’s not possible to know if the potential new 7-inch Surface will feature significant innovations compared to its 10-inch predecessor.
The Wall Street Journal also reports that until recently, there was no intention at Microsoft to launch a 7-inch tablet. However, the observation that many mini-format “tablets” were present in 2012, with excellent reception, apparently prompted a reconsideration at Redmond headquarters.

However, releasing a 7-inch tablet without major innovations would seem like a clumsy attempt to position Microsoft’s product in the segment occupied by competing tablets such as iPad Mini, Nexus 7, and Kindle Fire, to name the most popular and well-known.
Thus, curiosity about Microsoft’s real moves becomes evident: will they truly manage to offer a 7-inch tablet, especially at a low cost? The challenge is arduous, especially since it was revealed just a few days ago that Google is also working on a new release of the Nexus 7 at a lower price.
