Facebook Privacy: End of Voting for Subscribers

After a few weeks of experimentation, Facebook decides not to grant subscribers the possibility to vote on the privacy policy anymore.

Some time ago, we reported on a significant new development on Facebook: voting by subscribers had begun, to express their opinions on privacy and personal data management on Facebook.
This move seemed almost revolutionary, as subscribers were offered the opportunity – for the first time – to actually voice what they liked and disliked about the regulations they had to accept upon joining Facebook.
However, just a few weeks after its introduction, what now appears to be merely an experiment has led to Facebook staff deciding to halt the voting mechanism.
Apparently, the results were not as hoped because the tool was used by numerous subscribers to post irrelevant and inappropriate comments, completely unrelated to the stated purposes.
It became a sort of collective “venting space” that brought no real benefit to anyone and was therefore discontinued. The staff assures, however, that serious proposals were evaluated and that the system is not entirely flawed, but rather needs refinement, seeking new ways to vote on specific points, rather than allowing comments on anything without control and therefore without much utility.

In short, the quality of constructive and relevant comments was completely overshadowed by quantity, nullifying the chosen system.
Meanwhile, Facebook has decided to establish a new channel for dialogue: with the “Ask the Chief Privacy Officer” tool, users can contact Erin Egan directly – until November 28th. She will soon respond to the most interesting and numerous questions and will also conduct a series of meetings.
For now, therefore, the modification of privacy conditions still rests in the hands of Facebook, and no longer – even minimally – in the hands of users.
