We’re talking about Surface, the Microsoft-branded tablet again, because there’s news just over a month before it goes on sale: Steve Ballmer has anticipated the prices of Surface.
During an interview with the Seattle Times, Microsoft’s number one revealed that the price list is effectively ready, without detailing it but only giving the minimum and maximum price references.
Despite initial rumors that referred to Surface as a low-cost tablet, the reality today is that buyers will have to spend much more than the $199 that was rumored several weeks ago.
According to Ballmer, in fact, the average user prefers to spend a little more to have a higher quality product, especially from a functional standpoint.
Furthermore, a tablet should be practically comparable to a mini PC, rather than an ebook reader with multimedia features: this is precisely the other reason that led Microsoft to no longer want to produce a low-cost tablet.

The Surface tablet, therefore, will cost between $300 – sufficient for the base version – and a maximum of $800 for the top-of-the-line version.
So, rather than a competitor to the Kindle Fire, the Microsoft Surface tablet seems poised to enter the high-end sector, in direct challenge to the iPad.
Not by chance, precisely when discussing the price of the top model, Ballmer pointed out that for most people, the price of an Apple iPad is not at all high but is fair, proportional to its features and design.
The comparison with the Cupertino tablet is therefore open and not at all hidden, starting from the concept of value and ending with the decision on the price to be applied to Surface.
