Amazon has announced its intention to offer textbooks for rent to students through the new “Kindle Textbook Rental” service, with significant savings compared to purchasing.
Every year, right after the holidays, a perennial hot topic resurfaces: the high cost of school textbooks. However, starting this year, at least in the United States, there’s a new development from Amazon: the e-commerce giant has decided to launch the “Kindle Textbook Rental” service for renting school textbooks.
Students will be able to rent texts needed for their studies for the entire academic year or just a portion of it. The minimum rental period is 30 days, up to a maximum of 360 days.
Naturally, the longer a book – in ebook format – is kept, the greater the discount on the price, just as often happens with other types of rentals.
A strategy that could prove successful from various perspectives: Amazon might see an increase in e-reader sales, specifically the Kindle, while also paving an excellent, well-trodden path for Amazon’s new probable tablet, which we discussed here on FullPress just a few days ago.
Regarding the prices for renting school textbooks via Amazon, the company states that users could save up to approximately 80% compared to the cover price of the books.
What happens when the textbook rental expires? If the e-pages disappear from storage, nothing will happen to any notes taken on them. Personal considerations and study outlines will remain in the cloud, always accessible, viewable “in the cloud.”
