YouTube: Thematic TV Channels Are Coming

Just like television, YouTube has decided to launch its thematic channels, featuring programs specifically designed for this increasingly established form of content delivery.

YouTube is evolving and, after focusing on specific HD content, is now looking to expand its video offerings, no longer exclusively relying on content uploaded by registered users.
According to the Wall Street Journal, YouTube is preparing to launch a completely new platform based on thematic TV channels.
To achieve this, it’s evident that agreements will need to be made with industry giants, and indeed, negotiations are reportedly underway with Fremantle (RTL group), Electus (IAC, InterActiveCorp group), and ShineReveille (News Corp group).
For its part, Google – YouTube’s owner – has reportedly already allocated over $100 million to this large and ambitious project, a direct descendant of the initial concept for Google TV, which we covered some time ago.
YouTube’s thematic channels could, in fact, breathe new life into the stagnant situation of Google TV, which until now has only been able to offer a rehash of more or less amateur videos published on YouTube.
By focusing instead on specific channels and content produced precisely for broadcast on these new platforms, Google TV would gain a completely different purpose and meaning, likely achieving greater success than its current state.
All of this will be supported by advertising revenue once the project is launched.
Currently, there’s talk of about twenty potential thematic channels on YouTube, and it remains unclear whether end-users will have to bear costs (similar to accessing any pay-TV service) or if everything will be free.
