The video of Bin Laden’s killing via Facebook or email is a virus: beware of the links circulating right now. How to protect yourself from this virus?
The news of Bin Laden’s death continues to generate a desperate desire for information and details regarding the circumstances of his capture and killing. This is fertile ground for spammers and virus distributors who have wasted no time in releasing “poisoned” links online.
The problem is that hundreds of PCs are getting infected right now, as the viruses are circulating on social networks – Facebook in particular – disguised as status updates, shared links, or chat messages.
Many have indeed seen messages pop up on their walls like “it’s shocking” followed by a link to the alleged video of Osama Bin Laden’s killing.
Nothing could be further from the truth: it’s a deliberate lure, used by spammers and cybercriminals to get you to click on the link in question.
The same tactic is being used for the numerous emails currently circulating.
The advice is to absolutely not click on these links, even if they come from friends or people you trust. This may seem like obvious advice, but judging by how many such messages are appearing on social media feeds, it’s clear that many people have fallen for it.
Finally, be wary of the same type of message that might arrive via chat: this is the same virus, and it’s an automatic message triggered unknowingly by a user whose PC is already infected.
