Discover the news from Telepass service and alternatives like UnipolMove. From July 1, 2024, Telepass will change the contractual conditions of its subscriptions. Detailed information on new rates and competition in the toll collection market in Italy.
Telepass is a highway toll collection service present in Italy since the early nineties of the last century. For over thirty years, the provider of this service (automatic payment at the toll booth without the need to stop) operated under a monopoly. Subsequently, with market liberalization, other operators entered the scene, includingUnipolMove, a offering from the well-known Italian insurance company UnipolSai.
In recent months, there has been a lot of talk about the Telepass service and alternative options because the long-standing operator decided to change the contractual conditions related to its various subscription plans. It must be acknowledged that Telepass informed its customers well in advance of the upcoming tariff changes, which became effectivestarting July 1, 2024.
How have the costs of Telepass plans changed?
The user base utilizing toll collection is particularly large, and many have chosen one of the various Telepass plans. The main ones are four:
- Telepass Base
- Telepass Pay per Use
- Telepass Easy
- Telepass Plus.
However, the prices of all four of these plans have increased. The monthly fee for Telepass Base has gone from 1.83 to 3.90 euros.
The rate for Telepass Pay per Use, a formula designed for those who use the highway sporadically, was 2.50 euros per month in the months of use; starting from July 1st, it has changed to 1 euro/day of use + 1 euro/day for additional services; this plan also includes a one-time activation cost of 10 euros.
The rate for Telepass Easy has gone from 2.50 to 4.64 euros per month.
For the Telepass Plus package, the most comprehensive one, the fee has increased from 3 to 5.14 euros per month.
However, if you switch to Plus from a Base plan, there is a promotion for 3.90 euros per month valid until December 2025, after which the standard rate will be 4.90 euros per month; this rate is also applied to new customers who opt for this package.
For an overall view of costs, one must also consider the additional charge for customers who exceed 350 euros in total toll expenses within a quarter, for whom an additional monthly fee of 3.72 euros is applied.
Telepass Plus customers have the option to request Telepass Next, a device with voice assistance functions. The cost of Next is added to the Plus plan fee; it is currently 5 euros per month; it is also necessary to pay a one-time installation contribution of 35 euros.
Telepass Increases: the available options
The tariff change decided by Telepass is a unilateral modification of the toll collection contract conditions;
The possible options are essentially the following three:
- take no action: in this case, you accept the increases decided by Telepass;
- cancel the subscription and give up toll collection and other mobility services provided by the plan;
- cancel the Telepass subscription and choose a more convenient provider.
If you opt for the third solution, it is worth considering UnipolMove, which among other things currently has an active promotion on the Base plan, valid until July 31, 2024. UnipolMove has two plans: Base and Pay per Use.
UnipolMove Base on promotion includes one year of free subscription fee for up to two toll devices, after which it will pass to a fee of 1.50 euros/month for the first device and 1 euro/month for the second; activation and delivery of the devices are free.
For the UnipolMove Pay per Use plan, the fee is 0.50 euros/day and there is currently a 50% discount on activation (5 euros one-time instead of 10). The fee is activated upon first use of the device and is valid until 11:59 PM of the same day. When the device is not used, nothing is paid. UnipolMove solutions include toll collection as well as other mobility services, such as affiliated parking and blue zones, entry into Milan’s Area C, taxi booking, roadside assistance, and other mobility services.
