Spotify Aims for Video Streaming? Rumors Emerge

Spotify is reportedly set to expand its “catalog” to include streaming video.

According to usually very well-informed sources – specifically, the authoritative technology column of the Wall Street Journal – there is considerable ferment within Spotify’s circles during this particular period.
The company offering music streaming has indeed invited the press to an event scheduled for next May 20th, without however elaborating on the meeting’s content.
Discussions are quite general regarding news about Spotify’s next moves, without any more concrete details.
At this juncture, as we wonder what could be brewing, the very timely rumors launched by the Wall Street Journal intertwine: Spotify would be poised to introduce a new section, consisting of streaming video.
This ace up its sleeve would not arrive by chance, especially in terms of timing. While there is talk of Apple’s imminent entry into the same sector, given the recent acquisition of Beats, Spotify’s executives would not have stood idly by, betting on innovation.
Thus, according to the Wall Street Journal, in recent times, intense negotiations would have been conducted with major video content production companies, including some that also collaborate with YouTube.
It is therefore thought that Spotify will also offer entirely original video creations, following a formula similar to that of platforms like Netflix.

The prospect is undoubtedly interesting, although the video sector still seems to be dominated by YouTube.
However, the challenge in this case seems to be directed more at Apple’s moves than at other players in the video sector.
We therefore await the end of May to learn more in this regard.
