Sony has unveiled its newest E-mount lens model, the FE 100-400mm F4.5–5.6 GM OSS super telephoto zoom (model SEL100400GM).
The new full-frame lens ensures the high resolution standards that characterize Sony’s flagship G Master™ lens line, while offering incredibly fast and precise AF capabilities, a lightweight and compact design, and a wide range of professional features and customization options. It is an extraordinarily powerful photographic tool perfect for professional photographers and enthusiasts, especially for capturing sports or wildlife scenes.
Uncompromising G Master design and performance
A super telephoto zoom lens that meets the rigorous structural requirements of Sony’s acclaimed G Master series, the new FE 100-400mm GM lens delivers incredible sharpness across the entire image, zoom range, and focus range, along with beautiful bokeh or background blur effects that make every subject and scene detail stand out.
The complex design consists of 22 lens elements configured in 16 different groups, including one Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element and two ED glass elements, which work in synergy to reduce chromatic aberration and ensure optimal resolution. This lens also features an anti-reflective Nano Crystal Coating, particularly useful for capturing sports or wildlife scenes, as it reduces unwanted flare.
Fast and precise AF
To keep pace with fast-moving action, the new FE 100-400mm GM super telephoto zoom lens combines dual linear motors and a Direct Drive SSM actuator for silent and precise operation.
The dual motor system allows for rapid acceleration of the focusing unit to capture every sudden movement, as in sports or wildlife scenes; furthermore, precision positioning control and a new optimized AF algorithm ensure fast and flawless focusing, to fully express AF potential equivalent to that of the new α9.
Lightweight design, extensive customization
To meet the growing customer demand for lighter, more compact, and portable super telephoto lenses, the new FE 100-400mm GM weighs just 1,395 grams, making it one of the lightest lenses in its class and the perfect accessory to complement Sony’s wide range of compact cameras.
In terms of features, this lens is equipped with a zoom torque adjustment ring – a first for a Sony α model – which allows the user to adjust the torque level in the ring to speed up or slow down the zoom, according to their photographic style. The model also features a customizable focus hold button that can be assigned to various functions, such as focus mode selection, AF area selection, or the renowned Eye AF function.
This telephoto zoom lens is dust- and moisture-resistant[i] and is protected by a fluorine coating that makes it easier to remove dust or dirt. The model also features a removable tripod mount.
Professional reliability and performance
The new FE 100-400mm GM lens features built-in optical image stabilization for sharp images even when shooting handheld. It also boasts a minimum focusing distance of just 0.98 meters – a particularly versatile feature in the field – and a 9-blade circular aperture design, perfect for smooth and stunning bokeh.
The FE 100-400mm GM is compatible with 1.4x (model SEL14TC) and 2.0x (model SEL20TC) teleconverters, allowing videographers and photographers to capture images up to 800mm from full-frame cameras, and up to approximately 1,200mm (35mm full-frame equivalent) on APS-C cameras. A spare lens hood (model ALC-SH151) will also be available for the new lens.
