The address book phone number list is currently at risk on Snapchat : a bug jeopardizes privacy .
Snapchat is currently at the center of much controversy: a group called “Gibson Security” has indeed highlighted that the instant messaging app might not be very secure, at least concerning a specific aspect related to privacy.
A bug within the “Find Friends” feature could, in fact, lead to the rapid and untraceable disclosure of one’s contacts’ phone numbers.
This would allow cybercriminals to easily acquire a very long list of fresh numbers to exploit for their own benefit.
The Snapchat staff has therefore responded via the official company blog, countering that they are already aware of the issue and do not believe this bug can be exploited with such ease.
Thus, on one hand, the problem is admitted; on the other, it is minimized, specifying that work has been underway for about a year to resolve the matter.
In reality, and for the sake of precision, what is read on the blog post is that the staff is working to make the process of revealing contact phone numbers increasingly difficult.
From what is written, the path towards the definitive “closure” of the bug still seems distant, but there are no further technical details expressed on the blog that can entirely confirm or deny this.
