Sharing economy: the ten most shared things in the world

Proud to Share, writes car2go on its billboards, the world’s largest provider of free-floating carsharing. Sharing makes us proud not only because it allows us to save money and preserve economic and environmental resources, but also because it makes those who share a car part of a stimulating community.

But what are the different types of goods that are most shared around the world?
Here is the top ten:
The car: nothing else is shared as often as the car. car2go, the world’s largest free-floating carsharing service, currently has 2.9 million users and 22 million rentals per year. Numbers set to grow, as indicated by the consulting firm Frost & Sullivan, which predicts that by 2025, 36 million people will be using carsharing worldwide.
Car rides: there is another form of car sharing, so-called ridesharing. The world’s number one provider is Uber. Every year, the American company facilitates between four and five billion journeys. This category also includes taxi rides mediated through an app. In this case, mytaxi is the largest provider, with over 40 million journeys per year.
The apartment: leaving without booking accommodation? No problem: Couchsurfing.com has 12 million users, and Airbnb has a whopping 150 million customers. The market is growing rapidly internationally: Airbnb alone covers 65,000 cities in 191 countries, with over 3 million registered addresses.
Parking: in city traffic, car drivers spend about 30% of their time looking for a parking space. Consequently, the demand for intelligent parking systems is constantly increasing. The consulting firm Roland Berger believes that by 2020, the shared parking market will grow to a market volume of approximately two billion euros.
The bicycle: bikesharing is becoming increasingly popular. There are over a million rental bicycles worldwide, with about 70 rentals per second. The largest bikesharing market in the world is in China, which records four to eight rentals per bike per day. CitiBike alone achieves approximately 14 million journeys per year.
Tools: on average worldwide, a drill is used for only 13 minutes in its entire lifespan. This fact shows that sharing its use would be a really good idea. That’s why there are neighborhood sharing platforms all over the world.
Desks: currently, sharing workspace is very fashionable. On platforms like ShareDesk, it is possible worldwide to rent or lease rooms and workstations for limited hours. Sharing spaces is also a widespread practice among companies: in this case, employees share the same desks depending on the time they actually need to use them. This saves space and money.
Books: usually a book is read and then stored on a shelf. If it’s a really good book, it’s read a second time now and then. But wouldn’t it be better to share it with other people? Platforms like BookMooch make this possible.
Clothing: can’t find anything to wear in your closet and that evening gown costs too much? No problem. With RentaRunway, you can rent it for much less. Users range from high school students who need a dress for prom to wedding guests. It’s a great idea, as a study has shown that women in the United States wear half of their clothing items only once.
Practically everything: there are various platforms with which almost all items can be shared: household items, sports equipment, or various technologies. Whether it’s camera equipment, a camping tent, or a board game, everything can be easily shared.
An interesting fact: the only thing people absolutely do not want to share is their smartphone. A US survey showed that 85% of people refuse the idea without mincing words.
