The European Union is also enforcing in Italy the effects of a measure aimed at lowering the roaming charges for using your mobile phone abroad. Here’s what’s changing.
News in the field of telecommunications, to the complete advantage of consumers: from July 1, 2012, the first of a series of measures aimed at establishing the limits on roaming charges that apply when using a mobile phone abroad came into effect.
This is a first step towards the gradual reduction of costs that are normally borne by those who, when going abroad, use their device outside national borders: in the coming years, further cuts will be made, following already known deadlines set until 2014.
In particular, from July 1, 2012, the roaming calls cannot exceed the rate of 29 cents per minute (excluding VAT).
Reductions also on the price of incoming calls: it is known, in fact, that when answering a call while abroad, the caller pays according to the plan for calls to national numbers, but the receiver is subject to paying a certain tariff.
From now on, the price for this type of call drops to 8 cents per minute, also excluding VAT.
Regarding SMS, from the start you will pay 9 cents instead of 11 and finally, concerning the use of data traffic, it has been decided that it cannot exceed 70 euro cents per megabyte (excluding VAT).
It must of course be specified that this measure will be valid for the states of the European Union and thus these rates will be applied specifically within the EU itself.
There is also another novelty that will make vacation or business travel safer in terms of telephone expense control: you will be notified via SMS upon approaching a certain predetermined spending threshold. In this way, unpleasant surprises will be avoided and to continue using the smartphone, you will have to explicitly confirm that you want to proceed even if you exceed the preset threshold.
Within a year these tariffs will be reviewed, and likewise in July 2014: the goal is to further reduce prices harmoniously throughout the European Union.
