Motorola Xoom Family Edition: Lowest Price

Motorola announces the release of the Motorola Xoom Family Edition: a more affordable price but also lower storage, for a model suitable for domestic use.

News on the tablet front for Motorola: in a rather unexpected move, the company has decided to market a new type of Motorola Xoom, specifically designed for families.
The chosen name leaves no room for doubt: it is indeed called the Motorola Xoom Family Edition. Let’s start with its price: decidedly lower than the classic Xoom. The Family Edition will arrive in American stores at a price of 379 dollars, which ‘translates’ to about 270 euros in Europe.
A significant price cut, but at the cost of some compromises: first and foremost, support for 3G connectivity has been eliminated.
To use the new Xoom for the family on the go, you will need a Wi-Fi connection.
Furthermore, the storage capacity has also been reduced, practically halved: the Family Edition has only 16 GB of internal memory.
However, being a device for families, the software package is varied and focuses on entertainment for children and teenagers: games such as Asphalt 6, Kid Mode, MotoPack, Zoodles, and other games are included.
The operating system is Android 3.1, so no support for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which – we remind you – is about to make its debut at the presentation event on October 19th in Hong Kong.
The display is 10.1 inches, with a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash. 1 GB of RAM and a 1GHz dual-core processor with NVIDIA Tegra 2 complete the specifications of this family tablet.
Motorola seems to want to target a more home-based audience, given that the classic Xoom did not achieve the desired effect: what was supposed to be the fiercest competitor to the iPad did not achieve the expected success.
