Most Used Search Terms in 2011: Berlusconi, Stock Market, Simoncelli

What search terms did Italians use most on Yahoo! during 2011? Yahoo Italia reveals this with the creation of the “2011 Events of the Year” microsite, which captures the curiosity of Italian internet users focused on the web.
At the top of the list is the word “Facebook“, which has become a primary means of entertainment and communication, fully integrated into the daily habits of Italians.
Following that is the term “Weather“, a perennially popular word that never drops from this particular ranking.
Third place goes to “horoscope“: for the ‘I don’t believe it but who knows…’ category, a few minutes a day are dedicated to consulting the stars’ advice.
Still in the realm of entertainment, in fourth place we find the word “games” (from poker, to casino, to more classic online games), while in fifth position is the search term “TV programs“.
In sixth place is the word “Superenalotto“, which has always been a part of Italians’ habits both offline and online.
Seventh place is for the word “Maps“, but the real surprise of 2011 is represented by the eighth position, which perfectly reflects Italians’ anxiety from August onwards: “Italian Stock Market“. The difficult economic situation therefore prompted even those who are not involved in finance to seek clarifications and indicators.
In ninth place, we can note the presence of the terms “Census 2011“, as the distribution of forms to participate in the population census period began in September. Finally, closing the top 10 is the term “Tarot cards“, a relatively stable search term when compared to past rankings.
Regarding the most searched events of 2011, the “resignation of Silvio Berlusconi” ranks first, followed by the Eurozone crisis and the earthquake in Japan (also including terms like tsunami and Fukushima), then the death of Osama bin Laden, that of Gaddafi, the unrest in Libya, the Arab Spring, “Occupy Wall Street”, the famine in the Horn of Africa, floods and hurricanes, and finally the earthquakes in Turkey and New Zealand.
Marco Simoncelli is the top search term in the sad ranking of famous farewells, an event that deeply saddened Italy. Second place goes to Amy Winehouse, and third to Steve Jobs.
The ranking of most clicked celebrities is led by completely different people, with Belen Rodriguez reigning supreme: she is followed by Nicole Minetti and Elisabetta Canalis.
In the scandals rankings, Berlusconi and Bunga Bunga lead the way; second place is held by Dominique Strauss-Kahn, and third by Murdoch. The other positions are predominantly Italian: Milanese and Penati, Tarantini and the escort scandal, Saverio Romano, Pope Bisignani and P4 are just some of the other search terms on Yahoo.
Between concerns, scandals, curiosities, and superstitions, Yahoo! partially charts the character of Italians online.
