There is already talk of the possible release – at the end of 2013 – of the new Microsoft Xbox TV, a new multimedia entertainment device.
Microsoft is reportedly already working on the upcoming release of the potential Xbox TV. Although these are still just quiet rumors, it seems the project is already well underway, to the point of suggesting a worldwide release in time for the end of 2013.
A perfect occasion for a grand launch, coinciding with the peak of holiday gift purchases.
The potential Xbox TV would therefore interface with Apple TV, likely the only true competitor in this particular device category.
However, it is not yet clear whether the future Xbox TV will be a standalone device or rather a sort of “extension” of the classic game console.
According to the always well-informed magazine The Verge, Microsoft might instead release two different models: the next-generation Xbox console and a set-top box.
The device will be able to turn on very quickly – just like a TV – and will also allow for gaming, supporting casual titles rather than full Xbox games.
Microsoft is not releasing any information regarding this, but the decision to start entering new sectors with proprietary products, as is happening with the launch of the Microsoft Surface tablet, appears increasingly clear.
The idea of creating a universe entirely focused on the same operating system – the current Windows 8 – therefore also embraces the Xbox TV project, which, again according to The Verge, will run precisely on basic W8 components.
In the coming months, more will be known, and it will be possible to understand whether work is indeed being done on a TV and multimedia-type device or rather “only” on a more advanced game console.
