Megabox: Kim Dotcom’s New Legal Project

Megabox is the name of the new brainchild of Kim Dotcom, the creator of Megaupload, who is currently still under arrest. It’s a project halfway between Megaupload and a traditional online music store.

The closure of the Megaupload service and the arrest of its creator, Kim Dotcom, caused quite a stir online. However, despite the confiscation of his assets and his arrest, the father of the file-sharing service has not been idle and has announced the launch of a new project: Megabox.
Very little is known about the new service, partly because the announcement of the platform’s upcoming launch was made via Twitter: a few words from Kim Dotcom to let everyone know that he will soon be back, and this time without venturing into borderline or illegal copyright practices.
Megabox specifically targets the music industry and appears to be a completely legal project. The idea is to provide artists with a tool to upload their creations directly online, allowing them to sell their files at a price they set.
Nothing particularly innovative so far; the novelty lies more in the percentage of revenue reserved for the artists themselves.
Kim Dotcom promises 90% of the proceeds to artists and only 10% to Megabox.

This also means that major record labels would effectively be excluded from this distribution system, as the “singer – audience” channel would be direct, as would the flow of money from Megabox to those who own the rights to the songs.
This suggests a potential drop in prices for individual tracks and albums since the share currently allocated to record labels would no longer exist. However, record labels today also handle a significant amount of artist advertising and marketing, not just the aspect purely related to sales to the end consumer.
It is not yet known when Megabox will start operating and become available to everyone, but it seems highly probable that Kim Dotcom will discuss it again soon on Twitter.
