The new ebook reader Kobo Aura H2O has been presented. Its main feature is being resistant to water and dust.
A new ebook reader arrives in the Kobo family: this time the focus is on a device that is particularly suitable for certain situations.
Its name is Kobo Aura H2O and – as the “H2O” already suggests – it has a certain familiarity with water, in the sense that it is water-resistant.
Kobo Aura H2O has indeed earned IP67 certification, making it waterproof when submerged for up to 30 minutes at a maximum depth of 1 meter.
At the same time, great resistance to dust is also assured, therefore to external agents in general.
Michael Tamblyn – President and Chief Content Officer of Kobo – explained how the Kobo Aura H2O came to be: after conducting a survey among their customers, they realized that a large portion of users would like to use their ebook reader by the pool, in the bathtub, or at the beach. More generally, in relaxing situations conducive to reading. However, the fear of damaging their ebook reader with an accidental drop into water deters even the most careful users.
During the development of the device, it was decided to equip it with an anti-glare screen, so that it could also be used on sunny days.
From a hardware perspective, the Kobo Aura H2O runs on a 1 GHz processor and offers 4 GB of internal storage; however, the internal memory can be expanded with the aid of a microSD card, which can be purchased at any time.
The display is of the “Carta E-Ink” type with a resolution of 1430×1080 pixels, and regarding compatibility, in addition to the most used file formats, it also includes:
- CBZ,
- CBR
- EPUB,
- EPUB3,
- MOBI,
- PDF.

Regarding the battery life of the Kobo Aura H2O, the manufacturing company states that each battery charge cycle allows the ebook reader to be used for at least 2 months, considering usage of about 30 minutes per day and with the Wi-Fi connection module deactivated but with the backlight on.
Given the characteristics just mentioned, it is quite evident that the Kobo Aura H2O rightfully positions itself in the high-quality segment of ebook readers.
As for the price of the Kobo Aura H2O, it’s around 135 euros, with distribution starting in Italy from October 1, 2014.
