Kinect for Windows is the next frontier that Microsoft appears to be working on, in order to bring Kinect to PC as well.
The success of Kinect has been such that many developers have embarked on programming drivers to “migrate” Kinect to Windows and Mac. However, these attempts were unofficial, bordering on hacking. To rectify this, but likely also to broaden the market to those who do not own a game console, Microsoft seems to have decided to open up to the development of an official driver pack.
This is not the first time major giants have “made a deal” with tinkerers, indicating that a collaborative path can be taken while safeguarding their own interests.
According to the latest news, the “Software Developer Kit” update could be released by spring, and it appears it will be provided completely free of charge.
Kinect on PC opens up horizons for new uses of the control device, especially since development in this direction would allow the use of Kinect not only for video games.
The first version of the Software Developer Kit for Kinect will be released by Microsoft presumably within three months and, at least in its initial presentation, will be made available to developers. Only later, after this sort of “test phase,” will the commercial version be released, which is likely to bring applications and new capabilities.
