iPad Trade-in for a Surface Tablet: Microsoft’s Campaign

Microsoft launches the “trade-in” initiative for an iPad towards the purchase of a Surface tablet with a $200 voucher. Will it work?

In an effort to further promote its Surface tablet and incentivize user purchases, Microsoft has launched a campaign that is certainly generating buzz.
This initiative aims at the trade-in of iPads, offering a $200 voucher exclusively for the purchase of a Surface.
The project has, for the moment, only been advertised for the US market and seeks to draw attention to both Surface RT and Surface Pro.
Furthermore, Microsoft has decided to implement this initiative only through its offline distribution network. Therefore, the trade-in and the consequent obtainment of $200 for a new purchase cannot occur through websites, even those of well-known and accredited electronics stores and chains.
The iPad tablets to be traded in must be in good, working condition.
This move by Microsoft is naturally causing quite a stir, certainly a policy that can be judged as quite aggressive.
Industry analysts, such as Van Baker from Gartner, however, express skepticism about the effectiveness of this campaign.

Interviewed by the BBC, when asked if many people would follow Microsoft down this path, he replied no, explaining that Microsoft’s real problem, in his opinion, is the app ecosystem. Therefore, trading in an iPad to purchase a Surface tablet does not offer a resolution in this regard.
Without naturally underestimating the power of Android and the universe of apps, solutions, and services increasingly adopted and chosen by many manufacturers for new devices.
In itself, Microsoft’s move can be interesting, given the economic value at stake ($200), but we will have to wait and see the market’s actual response.
