Search engines and directories are two tools that users use to find your website. Most users browsing the web, about 75%, use search engines to find a site.
Other users will reach your site from directories, link exchanges, word-of-mouth, and, if the site is famous (but you wouldn’t be here 😉 ), from the media. Learning to optimize a website and make it visible in search engines is a very important step for you. Learning this craft will make your life difficult, but it’s worth it. The first thing you need to know is the difference between search engines and directories. When you suggest a site (we’ll see how in a moment) to a directory, your site will be visited by a person who will evaluate whether the site is valid or not.
When, instead, you suggest a site to a search engine, a spider will visit the site and add it to the database. You must be careful when submitting a site to a directory because, as I’ve already told you, your site will be visited by a person. Another of the differences you need to keep in mind is that in a directory you can only submit one page, except in rare cases, usually your home page. In a search engine, however, when you suggest a site, the spider will visit it and over time will return to your website to retrieve all the pages that contain a link on your home page.
SPIDER: this is a search engine software that is responsible for indexing your website, adding it to the search engine’s database.
