SayNow, a company founded in 2005, has announced its acquisition by Google.
The sprawling network of acquisitions of attractive companies by the Mountain View giant now includes a company whose strength and core business lies in voice messaging services. Apparently, Google intends to focus decisively on improving and expanding Google Voice, the service linked to its Gmail inbox that will clearly compete with Skype and similar services.
There may be more at stake than just “simple” free VoIP calls, considering that SayNow specializes in developing voice services applications for social networks: one of its first successful initiatives was the introduction of voice messages for artists and bands on MySpace profiles.
Nothing is known about the amount Google paid to acquire SayNow; not even the press release announcing the operation mentions the financial aspect.
Furthermore, nothing is known about the actual placement of SayNow within Google’s strategy: it can be hypothesized that the company will be used alongside or within the Google Voice team, but whether this involves new projects or if it’s a move to eliminate a potentially useful competitor is not very clear at present.
