The decision has been made and communicated: Internet Explorer is about to retire. Microsoft has officially announced the end of its browsing software, which – to be frank – has had a life far too long, considering how quickly technological products (whether hardware or software) are retired. Born in 1995, after 20 years of a not always honorable career, IE is about to leave the stage, making way for the development of a project that is not only entirely new but also as far removed as possible from the very memory of IE.
The announcement came from Chris Capossela during the Microsoft Convergence conference in Atlanta. The Redmond-based company is indeed focusing on a new browser whose codename is currently “Spartan.” However, the general public will likely know it by a different name, which is currently still unknown.
Microsoft’s next new operating system will therefore also bring the arrival of the new browsing software, although this “revolution” is sure to raise doubts, especially regarding business users.
Indeed, countless companies worldwide use intranet protocols and networks fundamentally based on Internet Explorer and, more specifically, on ActiveX. Therefore, efforts must be made to overcome the significant difficulties that could arise for this specific user segment.
The road to the final development of Project Spartan still appears decidedly long, if only because there is no sign yet of test versions, even limited to a few selected users.
While awaiting the opportunity to get hands-on with at least a beta version, one wonders if Spartan will succeed in winning back the thousands of people who – in recent years – have completely abandoned Internet Explorer in favor of Firefox and Chrome.
