WiMi is the new service to extend free wifi in Milan: the trial, starting today, will initially focus on the center of Milan, thus offering free connection and wireless always. Next step: extending the service to San Siro and Navigli.
In Milan, the stakeouts in search of a free wifi can be said to be over: today starts the service WiMi, to provide free wifi to the center of Milan.
The area concerned by this innovation is the axis from San Babila to Cairoli, passing through the Duomo area: from here, therefore, free wifi and free access to the network.
The project by the Municipality of Milan was entrusted to the Milan public transport company, ATM.
Today’s inauguration of WiMi is just the first step towards spreading free wireless network that will soon reach other neighborhoods: by summer the San Siro area will also be covered, then the network will extend to Villa Scheibler and then provide free wifi on the Navigli, presumably by autumn.
At least in this first launch phase, the free wifi in Milan called WiMi can be used for one hour a day, after registration.
You will need to request access through your mobile phone number; at that point you will receive a password via sms and can start browsing freely. The registration and password receipt procedure via sms will occur only the first time you request access to WiMi, provided that you use the same mobile number.
The daily 60 free wifi minutes available can also be used intermittently: a good way to check your email or your Facebook profile several times during the day; also useful if you need to quickly look up information online.
Access is unlimited if you want to browse the official WiMi portal.
For holders of non-Italian SIM cards, the procedure is slightly different: to access WiMi’s services, you will need to go to the ATM Point “Duomo” to register, providing a valid identity document.
While it is recommended to keep the sms with the access password saved, note that there is a procedure to recover it through the WiMi.
