Those looking for a free speed camera app can now use iCoyote, the iPhone and iPad application that locates and alerts speed camera positions.
Traveling by car with an iPhone or iPad in hand, from today there is a new ally for driving: it is aapplication that locates and signals the speed camera, whether fixed or mobile.
By downloading iCoyote (free until July 31, 2011 on the App Store), the driver will be able to know where the fixed speed camera stations, traffic light cameras, and mobile speed camera checks are located. In this free version of iCoyote, however, ZTLs (limited traffic zones) and tutor systems on highways are not signaled.
iCoyote is constantly fed by user reports: indicating the presence of a patrol equipped with speed cameras is simple, just one touch. At this point, the central system will process the newly received information and send the automatic update to the network, in order to warn those driving in that area within the next three hours.
Obviously, to receive all information accurately and promptly, it will be necessary to keep the 3G connection active and allow location.
The average consumption of iCoyote is about 200kB per hour, according to the Coyote press office.
Another important function of iCoyote concerns the reporting of traffic jams or accidents: also in this case, it is easy to understand that user contribution is essential.
Downloading iCoyote should be considered as an aid to driving, certainly not as a tool supporting irresponsible driving behavior.
It can indeed be useful when traveling on unfamiliar roads, just like a navigator, to warn drivers of potential hazards due to sudden braking: just think of the Tuscany roads near Mugello, full of speed cameras (at least until a few years ago), machines very useful to prevent reckless speeding but sometimes a cause of distraction for those not familiar with those places and fearing fines for a few km/h over the speed limit. Incidents that can happen to anyone and cannot be considered a bad experience of reckless driving.
Here, with the iCoyote speed camera app trips can become safer, as the speed limit not to exceed will always be clearly shown.
