Fatal electric shocks from iPhones: cases in China rise to two

Second case of an electric shock originating from an iPhone while charging, also in China: what is the situation?

Two similar reports in the span of a few days: an iPhone while charging has allegedly electrocuted its user.
A few days ago, news spread of the death of a young Chinese woman, struck by an electric shock while she was about to answer a call on her iPhone 5.
The woman, a 23-year-old flight attendant, reportedly died instantly.
Today, news has emerged of a second case, involving a 30-year-old man electrocuted by his iPhone 4, also while it was charging at the time of the incident.
The man is reportedly currently in a coma and not deceased, as initial news reports seemed to indicate.
The common element at the root of both incidents appears to be something other than the Apple smartphone: both individuals struck by electric shock via their device were, as far as can be ascertained, recharging the battery but using a non-original charger.
The counterfeit accessory was likely not properly insulated according to safety standards or, in any case, caused a malfunction leading to the electric shock.

If, after the news of the woman’s death spread, some even suspected a hoax, thus ruling out that hypothesis, Apple itself indirectly confirmed the seriousness of the situation by announcing that it had launched an investigation to understand the cause of the tragic accident.
So, it’s all true; just as true is the second case, which resulted in the unfortunate 30-year-old man falling into a coma.
Episodes like these highlight how dangerous it can be to handle non-compliant electrical devices: there are certainly products that, even if not original, are manufactured in compliance with international standards.
However, this does not seem to be the case with the products used by these two individuals. In any event, investigations are still ongoing.
