Facebook: free space for storage and file sharing

Facebook announces it wants to offer free space for storage and file sharing: here are the service’s features and limitations.

After Dropbox and after Google’s recent move with Google Drive, here comes Facebook into the free storage sector for users.
In the coming days, in fact, the blue social network will also launch this service, although initially the possibility will not be given to all registered users but only to a specific part of them.
The first to benefit from this novelty will be the groups: from Tuesday they should already be given free access to file sharing, to be done obviously only within the groups themselves.
The available space at the start will be limited: it will be possible to use only 250 MB free.
Decidedly little compared to what is offered by other similar services.
However, the function seems still to be in an experimental phase and above all appears as an operational tool intended for “service” file exchanges, light and not bulky files, such as documents, ebooks, or presentations.
Gradually the storage service e file sharing will be extended to all, progressively and continuing to test the service.
There are however some limitations that it is good to keep in mind when starting to use this novelty: it will not be possible to exchange files with the .exe extension, nor music files.

This decision was undoubtedly taken to prevent the spread of piracy, thus trying to curb possible illegal exchanges of copyright-protected materials.
In any case, a reporting system will also be set up that will allow users to report that a particular member is distributing files they should not exchange in this way.
Currently the new Facebook storage service does not yet seem to be a real threat to Dropbox, iCloud or Google Drive, just to name some of the best-known names in the sector: the limited space offered is certainly not comparable to what competitors propose.
However, it is worth reflecting on the fact that Facebook will probably soon increase the capacity of free storageand in this case the challenge will be open: after all, it is more than clear that Facebook’s ultimate goal – as far as the habits of its subscribers are concerned – is to keep subscribers within its platform for as long as possible.
The way to achieve this is undoubtedly to offer the same existing services externally, and on this path, it seems, Facebook is moving.
