Coronavirus: free digital services across Italy

Various initiatives have been put in place during these days of coronavirus emergency. Some of these concern somefree digital services for all of Italy. Let’s look at them in detail.

Many contributions from digital companies to support the red zones of Italy, hit by the coronavirus, whose “protected zone” from March 10th has been extended to all of Italy.

Digital Solidarity

In recent days, the Ministry for Technological Innovation and Digitalization has opened a section on its website, called Digital Solidarity, for digital companies willing to provide some services for free to the areas (now all of Italy) affected by the coronavirus COVID-19. The initiative involves the collaboration of the AGID (Agency for Digital Italy) and companies, associations, and individuals offering various free services. The objective is threefold:

• work remotely, through fast and free connectivity and the use of advanced platforms for smart working
  ;
• read a newspaper for free even without going to the newsstand or a book without going to the bookstore on your smartphone or tablet;
• stay up-to-date with school and training courses, thanks to platforms for e-learning, as proposed by the MIUR.

These are the currently active services related to Digital Solidarity and private offers (“updated March 17).

Connectivity

• Fastweb

From the second half of March, 1 million free Gigs will be available for the entire mobile customer community to share until the ceiling is reached. Once the ceiling is reached, customers will resume using the data included in their offer. Customers will not have to do anything; the data ceiling available in their tariff plan will stop, and they will be able to use the shared data traffic.

• Iliad

Iliad
Iliad, the fourth Italian mobile operator, is providing 10 GB of free internet traffic and unlimited calls to landlines in over 60 international destinations and to mobiles in the USA and Canada for users nationwide who subscribed to the Voce offer by March 11, 2020. The service activates and deactivates automatically. Interested users will be contacted via SMS.

• Shellerent

• TIM

Unlimited mobile data for 1 month for all TIM customers with an active data bundle (activatable online on TIM Party). Unlimited calls from landline until the end of April for all customers who do not have calls included. TIM customers can activate the mobile offer by accessing the dedicated webpage, the offer for landline calls can be requested by calling 187.

• Vodafone

Vodafone Business stands by all Italian businesses, sole proprietorships, and institutions to facilitate the adoption of remote work and offers, throughout the national territory, one month of unlimited data connection usage on all voice SIM cards to stay in touch with colleagues, clients, and suppliers at no additional cost. Automatic activation, the month starts from the receipt of the activation confirmation SMS.

• Vodafone for students

Aware of the emergency situation and to allow its customers to continue studying from home,Vodafone has decided to offer unlimited free Giga for one month to students between 14 and 26 years old. Activation by calling 42100. It automatically deactivates after one month.

• Wind

Wind, from the second half of March, progressively makes available to all prepaid mobile voice customers, 100 Giga free for 7 days. The initiative will start with customers residing in the areas identified by the Prime Ministerial Decree of March 8th and will then extend to all of Italy. Teaching and eLearning

• Amazon

Amazon offersfree training webinars, lasting one hour and thirty minutes, on STEM subjects and intended for teachers of primary and lower secondary schools in red zones. The courses will cover the opportunities ofCreative Learning and Coding applied to teaching. During the activity, free tools will be presented that can create an innovative “kit” for classroom projects. • Avaya

AvayaSpaces is a Cloud-based Team Collaboration solution that allows students and teachers to collaborate in real-time within “classroom” spaces via chat, audio, or video conference for up to 200 people and unlimited file sharing, all while using a PC or a mobile device like a smartphone and tablet from anywhere, all that is needed is an internet connection. Free use of the platform that provides all the tools for a professional’s digitalization, with:

• Skuola.net

• Treccani Scuola

The Treccani Encyclopedia Institute makes the content and tools of its digital learning platform, Treccani Scuola, available for free for all information. Within the platform, users have access to a constantly evolving archive, rich in resources selected and certified by Treccani, divided by subject and school level, shareable within digital classrooms where multimedia lessons, tests, messages, files, appointments, and deadlines can be exchanged. • WeTurtle

Web community dedicated to teachers that provides a free online exercise book with projects, guidelines, and innovative activities carried out in classrooms across Italy that can be replicated remotely by students, as well as free online training for teachers. Register for free on the WeTurtle platform: WeTurtle.org. All free content can be accessed freely online or downloaded in PDF to read offline.

• WeSchool

WeSchool (powered by TIM) is the digital classroom platform that allows teachers, from smartphones, tablets, or computers, to very easily take their class online, share materials, create discussions, discuss content, manage group work, assessments, and tests. • WMF

The largest Festival on Digital and Social Innovation offers over 400 hours of free online training to everyone. The initiative, called #AzioniamoLaMente, provides students, teachers, professionals, entrepreneurs, startups, and NPOs with the opportunity to train with quality content. The material is available on the Festival’s YouTube channel. The initiative, to support e-learning training for teachers in schools, also includes the organization of free online webinars and courses to enhance teachers’ digital skills and accelerate the school’s digital innovation process, and also involves La Settimana della Formazione, a project launched in 2012 with the aim of allowing as many people as possible to have free access to quality training products.

The Coronavirus Chatbot is also designed to assist doctors in managing suspected cases.
