Great news for live TV broadcasts: the canonization of John Paul II and John XXIII will be transmitted in Ultra HD.
Despite the subject matter not being inherently technological, the scent of holiness pervades even the pages of FullPress.it and tech-focused publications. Today, we will discuss the canonization of John Paul II and John XXIII, a world-spanning religious event that will take place on April 27, 2014, in St. Peter’s Square, the Vatican. The solemn ceremony will be presided over by Pope Francis and will be followed not only by the faithful physically present in Rome on this special day but also by millions of people who wish to participate from home via live television broadcast. This is why FullPress is discussing the canonization of John Paul II and John XXIII today: for the first time in Italy, live Ultra HD connections will be established. All of this will be possible thanks to the close collaboration between three industry giants: Eutelsat, Sky, and Sony, coordinated by the Vatican Television Center (CTV). Eutelsat will provide 9 satellites; Sky, for its part, will deploy a truly impressive “army” of cameras: 15 will be used for HD recordings, 5 will operate directly in Ultra HD, and finally, another 13 cameras will capture 3D shots.
At this point, Sony will intervene, adding its 4k cameras and 4k video projectors. How can one follow the live broadcast of the canonization of John Paul II and John XXIII? In Italy, there will be 120 Nexo Digital cinemas that will broadcast the event in 3D Full HD (500 in total worldwide) at 10:00 AM; furthermore, it can be followed on Sky’s 3D channels, specifically on 150, 506, 100, and 500, from 9:30 AM onwards. Connections are naturally also planned for generalist networks, but in these cases, the event will not be viewed in Ultra HD.
