In the coming months, Canon will launch the new Canon EOS 70D: its release is confirmed, albeit with few additional details.
The launch plans for Canon’s mid-range and high-end products are starting to take shape. Thanks to an interview with Masaya Maeda (Managing Director and Chief Executive, Image Communication Products Operations at Canon), we learn that the Canon EOS 70D will certainly be part of the company’s future.
The interview, given to DPReview, doesn’t reveal much about the potential features of the new camera, nor does it fully clarify whether the new Canon EOS 70D will be equipped with an APS-C sensor.
The reason is simple: Canon has officially decided to decisively pivot towards development projects involving the use of full-frame.
It is therefore not yet entirely clear whether the Canon EOS 70D will adopt a specific design solution over another, but it is certain that the company – in the immediate future – will clearly and decisively lean towards full-frame, considering it an interesting and useful path to pursue in the coming months.
There is also no indication regarding the release period of the new Canon EOS 70D. There is no precise date, but based on various rumors that circulated well before this interview, it’s reasonable to assume that the new camera could reach stores by the end of 2013.
The last point to clarify, likely in the coming months, concerns the positioning of this new camera: will it be offered as a replacement for the Canon EOS 6D, or will it be a new addition alongside the aforementioned camera?
More information will certainly be available soon, and we will keep following the matter.
