After a long period of waiting at Canon, the range of wide-angle lenses has finally expanded in recent months with the arrival of the new Canon EF-S 10-18 f/4.5-5.6 IS STM.
A truly tempting lens, included in the EF-S series dedicated exclusively to APS-C sensor DSLR cameras. L’The only offer available until now for this type of DSLR was the old Canon EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 USM, released 10 years ago.
The new 10-18 forò seems to be even moreù affordable and accessible even to enthusiasts who don’t want to spend a lot of money initially on new lenses, thanks to its fairly low cost compared to its predecessor.
Furthermore, another aspect in its favor, the 10-18 represents the’only lens in its category to be stabilized (IS – Image Stabilization). Canon states that it will beà possible to obtain shake-free photos and videos’of the image, gaining up to 4 stops.
At 240gè it is an extremely compact and lightweight lens, certainly ideal for travel.
This type of lens is necessary for those who love landscape, interior, and architecture photography, and generally all types of photography that require wide viewing angles (for more information on various photographic techniques, visit the blog:fotografareonline.it).
If, however,’your goalè is to have a wide angle but in low light conditionsà, for example, night shots, the 10-18 does not meetà these needs, precisely becauseé its maximum apertureè is very limited, starting from an f/4.5 value.
Thanks instead to the minimum focusing distance of 0.22 mè , it is possible to take interesting photos, highlighting, for example, a flower in the foreground, which will appearà largerù than the other elements in the background which, at wide apertures, will be out of focus, thanks to the 7-blade circular diaphragm. Not recommended forò portrait photography, this is becauseé the lens will certainly deformà the facial features, making the central part, often represented by the nose, appearù larger.
Even moreù the video recording benefits, which turns out to beà to be always sharp thanks to the STM technology implemented with an ultra-quiet step-by-step motor, without interfering with the’audio acquisition of the video.
The only drawback, unfortunately common to many Canon lenses,è is the lens hood not included in the package, but available for separate purchase at a cost of about 25€.
At the moment, the cost of the Canon 10-18 is around 280/300€
