Bluetooth Technology: “Visible” and “Hidden” Devices

The possibilities for a mobile phone owner equipped with Bluetooth at the moment of device activation are two: either make their phone visible to everyone or have Bluetooth active but hide their Bluetooth Address, hence remaining hidden.

Visible Bluetooth, or Discoverable Bluetooth, is a setting that can also be configured at the software level on your smartphone. It is usually set by default and makes your Bluetooth Address (BA) public, thus visible to other devices. In this case, the security level is low or almost non-existent, and anyone using a mobile phone or laptop can find and negotiate information with your mobile phone, whether you are aware of it or not. Hidden Bluetooth, or Non-Discoverable Bluetooth, is a setting that prevents you from being visible to normal searches by unknown devices. Unfortunately, however, hidden does not mean safe at all, because the Bluetooth of a device set to ND does not make its BA public but would still respond to inquiries from another device if they were made. It is therefore on these occasions that a blind scan must be performed. We speak of a blind scan in these cases because we are not aware of anything, not even part of the Bluetooth address, but to facilitate the work of the hacker on duty there are already tools available on the internet, such as, for example, software designed specifically to search for Bluetooth devices and “grab” the access code for a “trusted” connection.
