Recently appearing on the market, 3D glasses seem to be already on their way out, due to new 3D holograms under development, excellent substitutes for telepresence but also highly valuable tools for 3D cinema.
3D holograms represent the new frontier of 3D without the need for physical aids to create three-dimensional reality. A team of scientists, led by Nasser Peyghambarian, a photonics professor at the University of Arizona, has achieved a very high level in this regard, enabling the real-time “materialization” of 3D holographic images anywhere desired.
This represents a significant advancement (published in the authoritative journal Nature), particularly because the created image updates every 2 seconds: a negligible wait compared to the past, when holographic images required – at best – a minute to update.
3D holograms could become the new standard for telepresence, although applications are also promising from an entertainment perspective: it’s impossible not to imagine how useful 3D holograms could be in cinema. Characters would materialize outside the screen, without the need for viewers to wear 3D glasses.
It’s still early days to discuss all of this in detail, as the 3D holograms achieved so far are monochromatic. However, industry experts are already working on a more complete and colorful experience.
