No news regarding PlayStation Network: everything is still blocked today, April 26th. The platform continues to be unusable by the large community eagerly awaiting to use their accounts again. Online, however, the fear of hypothetical theft of credit card numbers is increasing.
Last week, on April 20th, an attack described as “external” occurred against PlayStation Network and Qriocity: since then, everything has been blocked, by decision of the admins and the security department who are working to ensure the right security conditions for the platform’s users.
A significant problem for the operators of PlayStation Network who, while posting reassuring messages on official channels (for example, on the blog and via Twitter), have not provided precise information about what might have happened and what consequences might have arisen from the external incursion. While on one hand it is implied that it was the action of hackers, on the other hand, server problems are being hypothesized. This second hypothesis, however, has not been officially confirmed by Sony. The community is in the dark and, not being able to rely on clear and definitive explanations, easily falls prey to fears.
Registered users are indeed expressing – here and there online and on dedicated forums – many perplexities: unsettling rumors are circulating regarding the fear of personal data theft by those who presumably hacked the network on April 20th. For many, therefore, the specter of credit card number breaches looms. Sony has not commented on this hypothetical event, however: no denial has been issued in this regard, but, it should be noted, no official confirmation has been received either.
What is certain is that, to avoid new alleged attacks, the decision was made to completely isolate the network, “turning it off” as if with a switch.
It will be Sony itself that will communicate when this unpleasant situation, which currently appears necessary to restore useful security measures, has been overcome.
At the moment, there is no certain date for returning online: the community will have to wait further.
