Less than a month ago, we reported on how to jailbreak Windows Phone 7 as discovered by Chris Walshie, an Australian developer. In the following days, numerous attempts were made worldwide to unlock devices with Windows Phone 7, prompting Microsoft to intervene. Surprisingly, they chose not to confront developers aggressively.
Microsoft has promised an open dialogue and collaboration, offering a pathway to the creators of ChevronWP7, the project that threatened to break Microsoft’s restrictions on WP7’s use and further development.
Instead, Microsoft’s response, at least in words and intentions, has been an openness to collaboration that could realistically bring more innovation and continuous freshness to Microsoft’s product, viewed from the perspective of WP7’s ongoing and future development.
These initial statements were met with enthusiasm by the proponents and fans of ChevronWP7, marking a point in favor of Microsoft.
If collaboration is approached diplomatically from this point forward, without posing (futile) resistance, the comparison with Apple‘s reactions in similar situations is inevitable: from Cupertino, efforts to counter jailbreaks are met with constant updates, while the door to external interventions remains firmly shut.
Time and the market will tell which of these two approaches will prove more successful.
