A decision by Apple to be welcomed or rejected, without “ifs” or “buts.” This, in a nutshell, is the situation that has arisen with the release of a letter from Apple to record labels that distribute records and songs via iTunes.
Apple has in fact decided to extend the listening limit for paid preview musical tracks to 90 seconds: the staff is convinced that an increase in the timer (currently set at 30 seconds) will lead to a greater number of sales, increasing the possibility of purchasing songs on iTunes.
In fact, it has been realized that a large portion of people interested in purchasing via iTunes exhibit a certain behavior: since the 30 seconds currently available do not seem to be enough for everyone to convince them to buy, many internet users move to YouTube, searching for a full track listen, and then possibly returning to iTunes to proceed with the purchase.
Why not provide a more substantial musical preview to those who use iTunes and therefore download music legally? This, for the most part, is the reasoning applied by Apple, persuaded that greater listening corresponds to greater conversions.
Hence the decision to announce to the majors the choice to switch to 90-second previews.
At this point, the reactions of the record labels are awaited: who will accept and who will leave iTunes?
