Facebook launches one-time password

Yet another innovation for Facebook users: the one-time password (One Time Password) arrives to access your account securely even from public places and shared PCs, without the risk of login data theft.

The operation of Facebook’s one-time password is very simple: just send an SMS from your confirmed mobile number (i.e., known to Facebook for security checks) with the following text: otp. The SMS should be addressed to the number 32665 and so, within a few seconds, Facebook will indicate, again via SMS, a code that can be used only once and for only 20 minutes, after which it will be practically void and therefore unusable by malicious individuals or by those who will subsequently use the public computer station.
This way, both attempts to intrude into someone else’s account and the use of personal passwords by malware or keyloggers installed without the users’ knowledge on the computer in question will be short-lived.
At the moment, Facebook’s temporary password service is not yet active in Italy, but in the coming days this innovation will be gradually extended to everyone.
