Twitter has acquired the young company Summify which has developed software capable of capturing hot news from the social network.
A low-key operation, but one that holds great value when you consider the Achilles’ heelof social networks, which translates to information confusion due to the massive number of messages.
The details of the operation were not disclosed, but the company based in Vancouver (Canada), founded by two young Romanians, has already moved to the headquarters of Twitter.
An attack by Twitter a Google News? It’s not known, although it’s easily conceivable. It should be noted that the categorization of Google is done semi-automatically, i.e., by searching for sources with specific criteria that, according to the company in Mountain View, certify their reliability. The categorization of news, then, is done using algorithms that have become increasingly sophisticated over time. Finally, a “hands-on” team takes care of assistance. Google News, moreover, deals with news from sources and not from social platforms. In practice, since its inception in the early 2000s, it has not changed its mission but only its technology.
Who knows if Google would also like to have a social news aggregator, which currently seems very difficult to achieve. It had tried, indirectly, with organic search mixed with tweets from Twitter, but a few months ago, following an expired agreement that Twitter did not want to renew due to a demand for millions of euros from Big G, the search engine’s SERPs were emptied of social news.
The war between Google e Facebook, moreover, is not new, so much so that Big G has never been able to benefit from the volume of information that flows daily on the platform of Mark Zuckerberg. Lastly, and importantly, we need to consider the declared war byGoogle against social network platforms after the rise ofGoogle+, the new social platform byGoogle.
In light of all this, one can infer that, at the moment, such an operation remains only a pipe dream atGoogle‘s headquarters, and only a meteoric rise ofGoogle+ can bring new social lifeblood toMountain View. At the moment, even this last hypothesis is far from any consideration.
Returning toTwitter who, for their part, continue with a policy of small, carefully considered steps, who knows if the acquisition ofSummify will help overcome the categorization of the hottest news in the form ofTopics which shows too much vulnerability to speculation and scams, at least here in Italy.
