Sony has released a new firmware update for its top-of-the-line full-frame mirrorless camera, the α9 (model ILCE-9). Version 2.00 adds IPTC metadata functionality, a new image protection feature, improved autofocus performance, and overall performance enhancements.

The update now allows photographers to apply IPTC metadata to all files, using Sony’s IPTC Metadata Preset software. This enables users to embed image information regarding the settings used for the shot, title, and description, as well as photographer information, copyright restrictions, and more.
Additionally, the update adds further functionalities, crucial for wedding, sports, journalism photography, and beyond, by enhancing image protection features. As with the recent a7R III, a9 owners can now assign the “protect image” function to a customizable button.
With the new update, wired LAN MAC addresses are now also displayed within the image information, and serial numbers can be entered into the metadata, providing more technical details about the image source.
Beyond this, the software update also ensures improved autofocus performance by refining continuous autofocus tracking on moving subjects. It also promises better AF-C stability when zooming in on subjects and is applicable when paired with any Sony E-mount lens. This increases the overall usability of the α9 and enhances its performance for shooting fast-moving, non-stationary subjects, such as in sports or wildlife photography.
Finally, the update also offers overall improved operational stability and provides a solution to the current inconvenience where the software occasionally reports overheating warnings when the camera is not actually overheating.
