Mozilla is definitively closing development of the Firefox operating system for smartphones with version 2.6.
Let’s talk again about the issue concerning the fate of Firefox OS, the smartphone operating system from Mozilla Foundation.
Last December 2015,we reported on the circumstances under which a tweet from Ari Jaaksi (Senior Vice President) suggested that the development team for the mobile operating system would not be continuing Firefox OS development for much longer.
In fact, the alternative to iOS, Android, and Windows Phone hadn’t captured users’ hearts, leaving this new and open operating system, like all Mozilla Foundation projects, in the lurch.
At the time the news was reported, however, there was no shortage of different interpretations of the aforementioned tweet, so much so that a clarification was also received via social channels from a member of the Italian community working on Firefox OS, which was detailed at the bottom of the article on December 10th.
Today, however, definitive clarifications have arrived, released by the Mozilla PR team: the development of Firefox OS for smartphones will end with its version 2.6.
It is also specified that this decision will also affect the Firefox Marketplace on various platforms: smartphones, Firefox desktop, and Firefox for Android.
this will mean that apps specific to Firefox OS will continue to be updated, while all others will cease to receive upgrades, will no longer be downloadable, and will likely not even function anymore.
To better explain the situation, Ari Jaaksi wrote and published a post on the official Mozilla blog, thus outlining a possible future scenario for Firefox OS.
The platform for ideas and development will be left open and free to receive new contributions, as a work plan is being drawn up for the coming months which will see Firefox OS as a pivot for Smart TVs and other devices.
It is no coincidence that explicit mention is made of the continuation of the project undertaken with Panasonic, regarding future Smart TVs: a clear example of the fact that the study is by no means closed but rather lends itself to future developments that are already real and well-established.
The possibility of using this work in the development of the so-called “Internet of Things” sector remains confirmed, exactly as anticipated by thearticle that FullPress.info dedicated to the topic on December 10, 2015; which, in light of these new and more exhaustive official explanations, takes on the characteristic of an anticipation that has indeed been verified and confirmed.
