Just a few days ago we discussed the phenomenon of theArabic SMS capable of crashing iPhones.
Today, news has arrived of a situation similar in some respects, this time concerning widely used software.
It has been discovered that using a certain sequence of characters on Skype causes the program to crash.
No big deal, one might think. After a crash – however much it may temporarily destabilize the system – a restart follows.
Not in this specific case: the string “http://:” (without the quotes) would trigger an infinite series of continuous crashes, with consequent endless restarts, unless the PC or device in use is forced to shut down.
The problem manifests on the latest versions of Skype installed on both Windows and Android and iOS.
However, the versions for Windows 8.1 Modern and Mac OS X seem to be excluded from this issue for now.
Microsoft labs are already working on a solution to completely eliminate this problem, as it is not a minor issue.
The crashes are triggered both when typing the eight-character string and when receiving it, so it is possible to encounter the infinite restart loop even if a contact sends this sequence of letters and symbols.

What to do if you have already encountered this problem?
The first solution – certainly temporary and therefore “partial” – is to delete the current version of the Skype software, then replace it with a previous, non-updated version.
In the meantime, official update releases are awaited from Microsoft technicians, who state that they have precisely identified the problem and are already working to completely eliminate it.

UPDATE: technicians have already released an update on all platforms. Therefore, the problem has been resolved.
