The thorny issue “Apple vs Italian government” reopens, this time due to a move carried out by the SIAE.
A few days ago we discussed the issue relating to the increased fair compensation fees.
The first evident and direct consequence of this measure was the almost simultaneous increase in the prices of Apple devices.
The Cupertino company let it be known that it had reacted to the Italian provision but, for its part, Minister Franceschini protested, explaining that in other European countries the same levy is even higher than in Italy, yet iPhones and other Apple devices cost less.
Hence the SIAE’s move today: a delegation went to France, to Nice, to buy 22 iPhones to give away, as a sign of protest against Apple.
The beneficiaries were invited to a press conference held yesterday; they are the Silvio d’Amico National Academy of Dramatic Art, the Experimental Cinematography Center, a department of the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia, the Community of San Benedetto al Porto of Don Gallo, and finally Telefono Azzurro.
Blandini of SIAE explained that it was decided to buy 22 iPhones “to show everyone how in France, despite the fair compensation for private copying being much higher than in Italy, the prices are lower than in our country”.
From a strictly legal point of view, however, SIAE sent three warning letters to Apple’s offices in Italy, the United States, and the Netherlands because, apparently, the receipts issued in the Apple Stores in Italy show the new wording “tassa sul copyright” (copyright tax) instead of “equo compenso” (fair compensation).
Another move that SIAE has declared it intends to make is the direct sale of iPhones purchased in France or, in any case, of items to be placed on the market at a lower price than the current one.
How will the situation evolve? Will Apple take up the gauntlet and respond in some way to SIAE?
