Nokia blocks support for Symbian and MeeGo: stop to updates and new releases from January 2014.
Nokia announces the closure of an important service, and the decision is not without controversy.
It has been learned that starting January 1, 2014, developers will no longer be able to upload new applications for Symbian and MeeGo.
Specifically, developers have received an email from the Nokia staff explaining that all apps currently available for the two platforms will continue to be downloadable, but only from the Nokia Store.
Nothing will change regarding the receipt of download reports or payments.
However, and quite simply, according to Nokia, “starting January 1, 2014, you will no longer be able to upload new content or update existing content for Symbian and MeeGo“.
All resources will therefore be shifted to support and development of Windows Phone primarily, without forgetting Asha, of course.
Nokia’s decision to close the stores is sure to generate doubts and controversy, given that the Nokia devices in circulation running Symbian in particular are still quite numerous.
For their part, some developers are trying to find a different solution to circumvent the problem, for example by exploring the possibility of making updates and apps for Symbian available on their official product websites and then relying on alternative markets for downloads.
New developments are therefore expected in this regard, but it appears that Nokia’s decision is final.
