Hashtags are about to make their appearance on Facebook as well: the social network’s staff announces it. How will they work, or what will happen to members’ privacy?
Saying “hashtag” automatically brings “Twitter” to mind: this element, useful for communication and, more importantly, for relevant searches within the Twitter cosmos, is indeed the hallmark of the microblogging-based social network.
The hashtag has therefore become the very symbol of the rapid communication that Twitter has accustomed us to, and so Facebook has also decided to implement its use, effectively borrowing its functionality and its very value from its somewhat “rival” social network.
Naturally, the team working on this project admits: “It will be a service similar to that of Twitter, Pinterest, or Tumblr,” and continues by explaining that they are designing a system that can highlight the most relevant and interesting discussions revolving around a specific event or topic.
However, it should be specified that hashtags will not have public validity if the status update is set to share only with friends or friends of friends: privacy settings will remain the same as chosen by the user, thus without the fear of finding your hashtag in publicly visible search results.
In short, “closed” walls will remain so even when using words introduced with # (hash, the hashtag symbol).
The novelty will be introduced by Facebook across all profiles and pages gradually starting from these days.
