Many years have passed since Napster, the well-known and famous file-sharing service from the “early days” of the web, took the world by storm on PCs before shutting down due to copyright infringement violations.
In 2001, Napster’s peer-to-peer service ceased to exist. Now, after twelve years, the decision has been made to “dust off” the product and relaunch it in Italy, this time entirely legally and with a different formula than before.
To access Napster’s rich catalog, users must pay a monthly subscription of 9.95 euros, granting them access to a vast library of music, readily available for streaming.
Napster works on PCs, audio systems, Android smartphones and tablets, and Apple devices, both online and offline.
Currently, the service can be tested with a 30-day free trial, after which users can proceed with the subscription if they wish.
The catalog boasts over 20 million tracks. However, apart from the name recognition, the service doesn’t seem to offer anything significantly different from major competitors like Spotify, which, moreover, offers a free subscription option (albeit with limitations to PC streaming only and not mobile devices).
Nevertheless, Napster’s reentry into the market confirms the current trend among all major players in the industry: music streaming is one of the most popular forms of entertainment worldwide, on both PCs and smartphones/tablets.
