Facebook is commencing testing for free calls via Facebook Messenger in Italy as well: here are the details and how the new service works.

Several months ago, here on FullPress, we hinted at a new development from Facebook: the ability to make free calls via the social network.
This prediction has now become a reality in Italy: tests for free calls using VoIP systems have officially begun.
The functionality of the new communication system is very straightforward: first, you’ll need to download the Facebook Messenger app from the Google Play Store (for Android) or the App Store (for iOS).
At this point, in addition to sending free messages to your contacts, you can also make free calls, naturally, to your Facebook friends.
Simply navigate to your contact list, access the contact’s information, and then click on the “i” icon associated with the contact with whom you wish to initiate the voice conversation.
The final step is to select the text “Call for free” which will then appear.
Of course, for you to start making free calls via Facebook, the contact you wish to call must also have the Facebook Messenger app installed.
Otherwise, the free phone conversation cannot take place.
It should be noted that to start using this service, you must be connected to the network via Wi-Fi or 3G: a connection of lower quality will prevent the call from starting due to excessive slowness, leading to a significant degradation in audio and overall user experience.
This is not substantially different from what already happens with systems like Skype or Viber, with the not insignificant differentiator that Facebook could truly begin to challenge telecommunications companies, given the social network’s vast user base: the numbers, compared to other VoIP services, are decidedly different from the outset.
