Ubuntu has officially made the leap into the “mobile” sector and has announced the upcoming release of a version for Android smartphones.
A precise release date is not yet known, but the product is now imminent and will initially appear as a “guest” on high-end smartphones, likely on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
In effect, therefore, a platform born and designed for PCs is arriving on smartphones: a significant innovation and one in which the Ubuntu staff strongly believes.
Mark Shuttleworth, founder of the open source project, has indeed declared to the BBC that he is convinced that all this will represent the future of the mobile sector, a step that giants like Apple or Microsoft itself will sooner or later take.
Ubuntu ahead of its time, it would seem from these first declarations of intent.
The innovation will probably be officially presented or at least previewed at CES 2013, which is just around the corner, taking place from January 8th to 11th in Las Vegas.
There is certainly another project on the horizon: the release of Ubuntu smartphones in all respects.
It is once again Mark Shuttleworth who speaks about it, assuring that negotiations are already underway with selected device manufacturers to develop new terminals that will natively run Ubuntu.
According to the estimates of the project’s founder, this possibility could materialize by the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014, with the sale of the first Ubuntu smartphones.
