As it prepares for its stock market debut in the coming months, Facebook continues to make changes not only to the features of the social network and the look of its pages but also to the very vision of its future.
The new venture of Mark Zuckerberg’s creation seems to be in the field of search engines: according to some rumors, a team of experts made up of about twenty engineers is already working to develop a Facebook-branded search engine.
The competition with Google would therefore be direct and, indeed, this has been apparent for some time, but on Google’s part: with the launch of Google +, Google’s social network, the social impact on organic search became somewhat more evident.
Facebook would instead do the opposite: based on the very large and impressive amount of information collected from social network users over the past years, the blue search engine would suggest personalized SERPs, using the “spontaneous trails” left by their “Likes” and the links shared with their friends.
So far the theory: it should be stressed that the work seems only just begun and that the true peculiarities of the hypothetical Facebook search engine are, of course, not yet known.

Here too, the risk of flop is looming or at least the risk of imitation: if Google has been criticized for wanting to launch the social project Google+ and for not yet having emerged in that area, probably the same could be said of Facebook which would be entering a field where Google is the undisputed leader.
However, it should be noted that for a certain segment of the web population, saying “internet” simply means “Facebook”: it is mostly the very young who have come online to participate in Facebook’s virtual life, so it is likely that for these people a Facebook-branded search engine could very easily and spontaneously become the gateway to the world’s web content.
The story is quite different for those who have been on the web longer and who, for their part, still see Google as the dominant figure in organizing the millions of links and words circulating online.
