Tiscali announces the release of Indoona, the VoIP system that – like Skype – allows you to make free calls, video calls, and free SMS, using WiFi or a 3G connection.
Here comes Indoona, the application by Tiscali that aims to become the “Italian Skype”, working on PC, Mac, Android, and iOS.
Just like the online communications giant, Indoona allows you to make free calls between users with the same application, while to call landlines and mobiles, a fee of about 0.8 cents per minute applies.
Obviously, for Indoona to work, you must be connected to a fixed network, optionally on WiFi, or to your mobile operator’s 3G.
The application can already be downloaded for free, directly from the official Indoona website.
Once this is done, you can start making free calls by picking numbers directly from your contacts: nothing changes compared to the usual operation of your smartphone or landline. The Indoona address book and the “traditional” one will integrate with each other, also allowing you to see at a glance which other contacts have downloaded Indoona and therefore can be reached completely free of charge.
On Indoona’s site, it is specified that this system cannot be used to make emergency calls: it’s important to keep this in mind.
Another very interesting feature of this very Italian VoIP is the possibility to request from Tiscali the assignment of an Indoona phone number.
This way, a virtual fixed network number will be assigned that will also be “planted” on the smartphone. The advantage is obvious, especially if you are abroad: calls made from Italy, for example by your friends and family, to this special number will be charged as a call to a landline.
Thus, even the call recipient benefits: no roaming costs will be paid, as happens when receiving calls on your mobile outside national borders.
However, this specific option is not part of Indoona’s “free package” but costs 24 euros per year, and it’s possible to request numbers for various other countries, not just Italy.
So, in a single easy-to-use application, you can have at your fingertips a range of communication options, all together: not by chance, the meaning of the Sardinian word “Indoona” is exactly “all together”.
